The 10 Minute Treasure Hunt

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

Surprise bae with a simple 5 step treasure hunt made from common household items.

So, you want to make a treasure hunt for your lover but you’re not sure where to start. The more you look the more you think “oh, I don’t have the materials I need”, or “I’ll have to spend forever making it”. But fear not! I am here to show you how to make a simple 5 step treasure hunt that will take your bae all over your house, and can be made from start to finish, in 10 minutes.

Materials

For this experience you will need:

  • 5x Buttons (or coins, any generic token will do)

  • A spoon

  • A toothbrush

  • A screwdriver

  • A key

  • Paper + pencil

  • Box of treats/treasure

The buttons will act as anchors to signify "this is what you're looking for". The household items act as markers to tell your explorer where to go next.

How To Set Up

  1. Place the button (anchor) and spoon (marker) in an easy to spot location for your lover to notice when they come home. Write a note saying something like "I'm lost, put me back!" and leave it with the anchor and marker. (An instigating instruction is important or your partner won't know what to do).

  2. Now place the next button and the toothbrush in the location you keep the spoons (probably the kitchen, let's be real).

  3. Place the third button and the screwdriver in the location where the toothbrush is stored.

  4. Place the fourth button and the key in the place where you store the screwdrivers.

  5. Place the final button, with the box of treats, where you keep the keys

As you can see, the anchor item acts as a signifier to let your explorer know that they're on the right track and the marker item tells your explorer where to look next.

Variations

The variations this game offers you are limited only by your imagination. Here are some additional ideas to build on the experience:

  • Add treats at each marker site

  • Add clues for a final puzzle at each site (I use playing cards) and place a locked box at the end for them to solve

  • Add cute notes or diary entries to express your undying love

Anchor Variations:

You don't have to use buttons you can use any ol' household item

  • Coins

  • Playing Cards

  • Beads

  • Food

This whole thing can be set up in 10 minutes and takes items you already have around your house.

Important note: USE YOUR SHARED KNOWLEDGE. Include jokes, references, and personal stories that you share with your lover to bring in that personal touch. This is why you can make a better treasure hunt than me.

Edit: I have since created a 2 minute video explaining how to make the 10 minute treasure hunt. Check it out on the Youtube Channel below
